  • Family Mentors

This programme has been designed for family members who wish to support other families to develop plans for their loved ones. Family Mentors will find themselves working in a variety of settings which require many skills.   Training as a Family Mentor on an 'Essential Lifestyle Planning' Course provides the trainee mentor with the key foundation skills necessary to ensure quality planning and implementation in an environment where the trainee is able to access individual learning and support whish is enhanced by group discussions and problem solving, all of which will stand them in good stead should they wish to work as a lone facilitator in the future.  The amount of and the manner in which support is provided by a Family Mentor is likely to be different for each family they support - each family being given as much assistance as is required, but no more than is needed or wanted. To be a Family Mentor, you need to be comfortable in a role of helping and encouraging, rather than doing or directing.  You also need to be a local 'system's navigator' (having knowledge of how systems work locally) so as you can help people connect with others that will be helpful in implementing plans that families have generated.
